Book 4
This book is dedicated to – HYPATIA
Murdered by a Christian mob in Alexandria, 415AD – much provoked by the inflammatory words of Cyril, bishop of Alexandria. (In the same year a Jewish mob had murdered many Christians. Cyril had had the Jews expelled from Alexandria, confiscating their property – did he need their wealth? A saintly type!). Within the Greek culture, Hypatia, was head of the Platonist school in Alexandria (a ‘university’ by today’s definitions – the Greeks had enormous libraries around which ‘schools’ of learning functioned). She was a charismatic teacher of mathematics, astronomy and philosophy and she was a pagan. She loved her father deeply, a teacher too (‘Professor’) and had learnt much from him. She had no need for a husband, emphatically expressed by her. In 1882 (1467 years later!), the aggressive ‘saint’ Cyril of Alexandria became a ‘doctor’ of the Roman church – he is neither saint nor doctor in the Eastern church.

THE EDUCATION OF INDIA
In New York I have watched the Irish colonists landing.
Letter to Mrs. Sarala Ghosal, Editor, Bharati pub.
Darjeeling, 24 April, 1897. From Bengali. CW 4.
1- We have been slaves forever. 2- That we appear so greatly conservative under foreign rule. 3- There is no chance of a headache where there is no head! 4- I do not expect anything from the rich of India. 5- If we are to rise, it is by spreading education among the masses. 6- Why has originality entirely forsaken this country? 7- Through education comes faith in one’s own Self. 8- I used to watch the Irish colonists landing; downtrodden, destitute, penniless, fright in their step, alarm in their eyes. 9- In six months they had changed, a different step, upright walk, the expression of fright gone. 10- He had heard, “Pat, you are a man as we are. A man like you and me can do everything, have courage!” 11- A lack of Self-Belief is the result. 12- Therefore by that are we so near to our own destruction. 13- Then so can we – ‘Just as the farmer breaks the earth to reach the water-course’. 14- The money for these works would have to come from the West. 15- Modern science has undermined the basis of Christianity. 16- Luxury is about to kill the religious instinct. 17- In the West, women rule. 18- The only woman who went over was Pandita Ramabai. 19- I see a prophetic vision – if an Indian woman preaches in the West, there will rise a great wave which will inundate the whole West. 20- There is no other way – can salvation ever come from forming societies? 21- I am a mendicant, an itinerant monk. What can I do? 22- The spiritual conquest of Europe, America, should be our supreme mantra. 23- A kindred spirit will be born out of limitless time to accomplish this work. 24- About a vegetarian diet I have this to say.

WE OURSELVES. THE OPEN SECRET.
Take a common flower – it is Infinite!
Everything is infinite – that you see, feel, every thought, every Soul.
Payne’s Hall, 220 Broadway. LA.
5th January 1900. CW 2.
1- Take a common flower. We say it is finite but it is not, it is Infinite! 2- And the first and greatest is ourselves. We say that we are finite. 3- There is no limit to our wants. 4- In this infinite ocean of existence, we are wavelets. 5- The biggest suns exist only because your eyes see them. 6- The tree is Infinite, so is everything you see or feel, every thought, every Soul. 7- The human Soul never forgets its Freedom and is ever seeking it. 8- The little worm crawled out of the way of the giant steam locomotive. 9- Everywhere we see this assertion of Freedom. 10- That which they kept placed outside themselves, was really they themselves – inside. 11- This then is the end of all death, the end of all depression. 12- They who can lose their being, can lose their very existence. 13- What creed can I follow? What sect can I follow? I am in every sect! 14- I am That! I am That! 15- Help yourself out of yourself. None else can help you, friend! 16- I own the laws of Karma [Action with Result] 17- ‘I am The Infinite, That Eternal, Changeless Self’ – so sings one of our poets. 18- Let us drink this cup that leads to: The Immortal, The Unchangeable! We fear not! We can never die!

THE GREAT TEACHERS OF THE WORLD.
Do you have anything to give? Then give it! Spirituality is feeling!
Talking is not actuality. Shakespeare Club, Pasadena. LA. 3 Feb. 1900. CW 4. 1- Nations rise and fall in waves. This motion is always there. 2- Spiritually, nations follow the same wave motion. At the crest of a great wave a great Messenger is produced. 3- These are the Prophets, the Messengers of Life. 4- Each race has a part to play in the divine harmony of nations, its mission to perform. 5- We can only understand it when a person delivers it. 6- Humanity has put their Souls at the feet of these extraordinary personalities. 7- And when These Great Lights come, the person realises God. 8- We are like bits of straw rocking to and fro in the river. 9- They come, the whole plan is laid out. They don’t swerve, they don’t reason. 10- It’s by direct perception, not by reasoning. 11- The Great Shining Ones believe in Themselves as no one else does. 12- One moment I cannot be destroyed, the next a spook appears and I am quaking! 13- Why? I have lost faith in myself. 14- The question is, do you have anything to give? Then give it! 15- They command. You have to receive the command. 16- Whom else should we worship? 17- What we have never experienced, we can form no idea of. 18- Talking is not actuality. 19- If you only see Truth in one Messenger, you do not understand Divinity. 20- Some fools drink brackish water when fresh water is nearby – because their fathers dug the well! 21- Spirituality is feeling, seeing I am the Spirit with the Universal Spirit. 22- Think something new. Avoid thinking of the old. 23- Do something! Think something! Or I might as well be dead. 24- They who never think, they are mere jellyfish! 25- Death is the result of inaction. Be active! 26- Where there is any real thinking, the Soul grows Godwards, bondage vanishes, Karma’s effects fly away! 27 So many ways of reaching that state of direct perception. 28- Remain detached. 29- The Lord is in the partner – and so you love them. 30- Wherever there is love, know there is the spark of Thats Presence. 31- They who give up the fruits of their work are untouched by the world. 32- The mind continues – just whirling, whirling, whirling. 33- This mind, it won’t be quiet, I have my world with me all the time. 34– Plunge in! Do the duty at hand. By degrees you will see the Truth. 35– Each person’s work is as good as the emperor’s. 36– I first, then let everyone else look out for themselves. 37– Oh you sleeping one, do you ever think of the millions starving and dying? 38– Do not delay a moment! Leave nothing for tomorrow! Get ready for the final event! 39– Purity is strength, goodness is strength. 40– Mohammed was the prophet of equality, brotherhood. 41– Compare this to the way African Americans and American Indians are treated in this country. 42– You see the greatness of the Muslim – in brotherhood. 43– Better you take all the old messages and replace them with your own realisations. 44– They reached their perfection and we will reach ours. 45- I will become a child of God! No, I will become a God!

THE CLAIMS OF VEDANTA.
Like mushrooms; alive today, gone tomorrow!
First Unitarian Church. Oakland, Bay Area.
Lecture requested by Rev. B.F. Mills.
2000 attend. Some 500 turned away. 25 Feb. 1900. CW 8.
1- Born like mushrooms; alive today, gone tomorrow! 2- First to tell you of the rise of Vedanta. 3- The moral agnostic only knows the external, it is dead nature. 4- There is depression everywhere. 5- Looking outside will never find it. Looking inward will find it. 6- Vedanta offers the practical. 7- That is what we call the Universal Mind. 8- The stream’s water is changing but the stream’s banks remain the unchanged. 9- Where does the Soul go to after death? 10- Stand by and touch your dead body. 11- The one great secret of religion is to know you are a Spirit.

THE LAWS OF LIFE AND DEATH
How to Stop Going to Heaven!
First Unitarian Church, Oakland.
7 March. 1900. CW 8. The Oakland Tribune.
1- Not how to go to heaven, but how to stop going to heaven! 2- Behind the body, behind the mind, there must be something. 3- The mind is the fine instrument through which the Soul acts.
THE REALITY AND THE SHADOW.
Wendte Hall, First Unitarian Church, Oakland.
8 March. 1900. CW 8. The Oakland Tribune.
1- Vedanta teaches there are two worlds, the external or sensory and the internal or subjective. 2- My two realities, that of nature and that of my Soul, are the same – the difference is caused by Delusion. 3- The Soul never changes in its essence, it is modified by Delusion. 4- This unity of the Soul, common humanity, is the basis of morality. 5- If we are bound, who bound us?
Chap. 32 Page 65
THE WAY TO SALVATION
Real salvation is through work and love.
Wendte Hall, The First Unitarian Church, Oakland.
12 March 1900. CW 8. The Oakland Enquirer.
1- The 2 great watchwords of every religion are renunciation and self-sacrifice. 2- Your ancestors called it the devil but it is our own false Self. 3- Some have 2 Gods, some have 1 God, some none at all! 4- Real salvation is through work and love. 5- When you can give up money, friends, fathers, mothers, all that is in this world.
Chap. 33 Page 67
KRISHNA’S MESSAGE TO THE WORLD.
Your heart will teach – the ‘Teacher-Within’ will teach you all the creeds, philosophies.
It is our desire that binds us. All the devils are in the mind. It is no use living in a cave because the same mind will be there!
Offer everything. Fight on!
Union Square Hall, South Post St. SF.
1 April 1900. CW 1.
1- The weak, in the eyes of the strong, are only beggars. 2- If guided by eternal law – eternal chances await everyone. 3- It is a curious fact, the followers of Krishna have no word for their religion, while foreigners might call it Hinduism or Brahmanism. It has many sects. 4- There were never two religions. 5- The great work of Krishna was to clear our eyes, give us a broader vision. 6- Then all sorts of legends are invented around Him. 7- The two main themes: the harmony of different ideas and detachment. 8- Do not curse others who are not as strong as you. 9- The Teacher within will teach all the creeds and philosophies. 10- When the Soul wants to depend on nothing ‘It’ has reached the height of philosophy. 11- I love ‘That’ because ‘It’ is love Itself! 12- Because all the devils are in the mind. 13- Our own attitude makes the world what it is for us. 14- Behold, I have no duty. Every duty is bondage. 15- Inasmuch as you have done it to the least of these, you have done it to Me. 16- God comes to you in the blind, the lame, the poor, the weak. 17- Work becomes a joy. Be detached. That is the whole secret. 18- Do nothing with the idea of “Mine”. 19- How it is the most intense peace and calm. 20- It is our desire that binds us. 21- If you lack the strength for even that, do some good works. Offer everything to the Lord. Fight on! 22- A few words about the life of Krishna. 23- Whenever virtue subsides and irreligion prevails, I come down. 24- They know from their childhood what they have come for. 25- And the vibration continues on and on. 26- The Great Souls, they are the living Gods of the world.

We help ourselves, not the world. In this stress of our material life, our nerves lose their sensitivity and become hardened.
ADVANCED KARMA-YOGA CLASS.
Book, Karma-Yoga – Path of Work. Ch. 5.
228 W. 39th St. NY. Class in his rooms.
3 January 1896. CW 1.
1- In every religion there are 3 parts: philosophy, mythology and ritual. 2- Therefore symbols are of great help. 3- We cannot think but in symbols. Words are symbols of thought. 4- The cross existed among the Aztecs and the Phoenicians. 5- The circle has been a great symbol throughout. 6- There never was an idea without a corresponding word. 7- In the world’s ritualistic symbols we have an expression of the religious thought of humanity. 8- In this stress of our material life, our nerves lose their sensitivity and become hardened. 9- The older we grow, the more callous we become. 10- The power of the Word. 11- We shall find that helping others is helping ourselves. 12- The mice never got anywhere, so it is with our helping the world. 13- This world is neither good nor evil. 14- Life is good or evil according to our state of mind. By itself, it is neither good or evil. 15- It is not the receiver who is blessed but the giver. 16- We must work. That is the only way we can become perfect. 17- Be grateful to the person you help. 18- Never will misery come through work done with detachment. 19- There was a poor man who searched for a ghost. 20- One must first know how to work without attachment. 21- It is the level-headed, the calm person of good judgement, who does good work. 22- It is a great privilege for us to be allowed to do anything in this world. 23- Our duty is to sympathise with the weak and love the wrongdoer.

Path of Love – Bhakti-Yoga.
The Cherished One – THE ISHTA.
I can never teach you anything. You will have to teach yourself.
228 W. 39th St. NY. Class in his rooms.
6 January 1896. CW 4.
1- All of us want to get rid of misery. 2- There are many ways to reach the goal. 3- There are a few who love all humanity. 4- Each sect will see Christ in its own way. 5- Following the Path of Love. 6- The chosen way – the theory of the Cherished One. 7- In relative perception, truth is various, but the Absolute Truth is only One. 8- As millions of distanced radii converge on the sun, they will all meet at one centre point, without any distance. 9- The meeting point, where they are one is God, we are the distanced radii. 10- The only way is to march to the centre. Then our differences vanish. 11- All attempts to herd people together into the same enclosure and worship the same God have failed. 12- What business has my father to put a book in my hand and say ‘This is God’? 13- I can never teach you anything. You will have to teach yourself. 14- I must teach myself religion. What right has my father to put all sorts of nonsense into my head? 15- What a mass of superstition is in your head from your childhood religion. 16- Take up that one which is most fitted to you. 17-Higher religion cannot be made public. 18- Pray to your Father in secret. 19- But secret societies are diabolical schemes. 20- There are no secret societies in India. A purely Western idea. 21- Only half a dozen will follow me – but I do not want a crowd. What can crowds do? 22- The history of the world was made by a few dozens, the rest were a rabble. 23- There is a still higher form called inspiration – it does not reason. 24- Your power of reasoning was given you – see that you use it properly. 25- We are fools if we stimulate the hunger for wonders. 26- Be strong and stand up. 27- Vanity of vanities, all is vanity¹.

The Ideal of the Path of Work –
That which is selfish is immoral and that which is unselfish is moral. Absolute equality can never be. ‘Liberty, Equality, Fraterity’, this too is fanaticism.
KARMA-YOGA.
Book, Karma-Yoga. Ch. 8.
228 W. 39th St. NY. Class in his rooms.
10 January 1896. CW 1.
1- The Four Paths [of Yoga – Moral and Frugal Living with Sitting Still] to follow are by your traits – they overlap. 2- All four lead to the same goal. 3- The whole universe is the result of this struggle for Freedom. 4- Freedom is the one goal of all nature, thinking or matter without thought. 5- Becoming Infinite is the goal of all philosophical teachings. 6- That which is selfish is immoral, and that which is unselfish is moral. 7- One need not believe any doctrine, may not believe in God, nor ask what their Soul is. 8- The next question – what is this work? 9- In the ocean, we cannot raise a wave without making the trough. 10- We cannot add any happiness to this world. 11- So, old nations are apt to be less hopeful than new nations. 12- In modern times; the form of equality – ‘Liberty, Equality and Fraternity’ – this too is fanaticism. 13- All things are struggling to reach that perfect balance. 14- Absolute equality, the perfect balance of all the struggling forces can never be. 15- It is the difference in the brain which makes one person differ from the other. 16- While this world lasts, things will differ and they must. 7- One way is to give up our desires – impossible to do! 18- The goal can be reached through following the Path of Work. 19- The Sage asks why you require any motive to work other than the love of Freedom. 20- The smallest selfishness in work forges another link in the chain on our feet. 21- It is good to say we should be perfectly detached, but how to do it? 22– Let me tell you about one man who put the Path of Work into practice. He is Buddha. 23– But Buddha did not care for theories of God! What is the use about discussing doctrines? Do good and be good. 24- The whole human race has produced only one such character – Buddha. 25– Believe not because some old manuscript says it. 26- He who works without motive, not for money, nor for fame, for nothing else, he will be a Buddha.

Control of our Psychic Life-Energy.
OUR PSYCHIC PRANA.
I advise you to connect the mental repetition of the Aumm/Omm to that ‘Life-Energy’ Breathing.
228 W. 39th St. NY. Class in his rooms.
11 January 1896. CW 1.
1- Our minds have lost sight of the finer motions inside us. 2- Sit upright, the body kept straight. 3- You should join the mental repetition of the Aumm/Omm to that ‘Life-Energy’ Breathing. 4- Let the word flow in and out with the breath, rhythmically, harmoniously, so the whole body becomes rhythmical. What rest! 5- The first effect is a calmness comes over the face, the tension is gone. 6- The imagination can help you a great deal. 7- You will find you have the power and you take pleasure in it. 8- You can practise even while you are sitting at your work. 9- Your own mind will have become your Book of Knowledge. 10- We get beyond the intellect. 11- All energy has to be taken up from the lowest Hormone Gland (centre or organs) to the highest Hormone Gland [Hormone Glands=Chakras]. 12- The highest of energies is the special “Mental Power Pack”. 13- The same energies that are working as muscular power will become “Mental Power”. 14- Sexual thought and sexual energy, when mastered, become transformed into “Mental Power” [Sanskrit – the Ojas, they significantly increase mental strength/clarity]. 15- That is why all the spiritual giants have insisted on absolute chastity.

THE SOUL, NATURE AND GOD.
Practical Vedanta. There cannot be two infinites!
228 W. 39th St. NY. Class in his rooms.
15 January 1896. CW 2.
1- The organs cannot sense anything until something is attached to them. 2- That something is the mind. 3- None of them can be The “Knower”, the witness, the perceiver. 4- There must be a Real Demonstrator, a Real Enjoyer, a Real Self behind all these senses – The “Knower”. 5- The person’s Soul really demonstrates, directs these senses. 6- The person’s Soul commands the faculties, they obey. 7- Behind, there must be a universe of finer matter which we call thought and behind that there must be a Soul. 8- That Soul behind each mind is the individual Atman and that Soul behind the universe is God. 9- All this creation, all this expression, cannot be produced out of zero. 10- Nor can something go back to zero, nothing. 11- We know from science that this earth is cooling down. 12- There is evolution and there is involution. 13- We know the sum total of energy in the universe stays the same at all times. 14- There is no creation in the sense that something is created out of nothing. 15- Time and space are infinite – they did not begin! 16- The spiritual body endures through long periods. Once it becomes Free it falls away. 17- The Soul is unity indivisible. 18- We have three entities: nature; ever changing. God; unchangeable. The Soul, also unchangeable, as God. 19- The cause must be present to produce the result and the cause becomes the result. 20- God has become all the Souls. Each Soul is a part of God. 21- This is Dualism – the first view of religion. 22- We are little beings, sparks from that mass of fire. 23- So God is the Soul of our Souls. 24- There cannot be two infinites. 25- The same Infinite Soul is also the background of the human mind.

First Closing Down the Senses, then Concentrating = PRATYAHARA AND DHARANA.
Only when we teach a child how to control their mind, do we really help them. You must give up this nibbling at things.
Book, Raja-Yoga – Path of Deeper Seeking. Ch.6
228 W. 39th St. NY. Class in his rooms.
18 January 1896. CW 2.
1- Only when we teach a child how to control their mind, do we really help them. 2- What would be the result of controlling the mind? 3- They make the mind strong enough to ignore the senses. 4- The goal of each Soul is mastery, Freedom from the slavery of thought. 5- There have been dancing and howling sects who spread like an infection. 6- They are sowing the seeds of future decay, lunacy, death. 7- Therefore beware of everything that takes away your Freedom. 8- Freeing the mind from the thrall of the senses. 9- The mind is incessantly active by its nature, drunk with desire. 10- The first lesson is to sit still for some time and let the mind run on. 11- You will find that day by day the mind’s changes of behaviour become less and less, it becomes calmer. 12- Only after a struggle for many years can we learn to close down the senses (practise Pratyahara). 13- When the intellect is confined and limited to a certain place, it is now Concentration. 14- The mind should be made to think of one point in the heart. 15- Too much work distracts the mind – it cannot be controlled after a whole day’s work. 16- It will tone down nervous excitement, bring calmness and more clarity. 17- Sound health will be a sign. Many other signs are seen. 18- Those who want to be Sages and practise hard must take care of their diet first. 19- A strict diet is necessary for rapid progress. The whole functioning becomes finer and finer. 20- The dropping of a pin feels like a thunderbolt – perceptions get finer. 21- First hear, then understand, then, leaving all distractions, shut off your minds to outside influences. 22- You must give up, once and for all, this nibbling at things. 23- Plunge in! Work without thinking of the result. 24- To the lethargic, non-persevering, religion is simply entertainment.

RAPTURE – [SAMADHI].
Rapture is the super-conscious state, much higher than reasoning. Experience is the only teacher we have.
Book, Raja-Yoga – Path of Deeper Seeking.
228 W. 39th St. NY. Class in his rooms.
25 January 1896. CW 1.
1- Almost every action done unconsciously can be brought to the plane of consciousness. 2- That work done through the ego is done consciously, that done without the ego is done unconsciously. 3- There is an even higher plane without the ego, beyond consciousness, where the mind still works, called Rapture or super-consciousness. 4- Much higher than can be got by reasoning, Rapture is called the super-conscious state. 5- Yet it is beyond this circle of reasoning that there lies all that humanity holds most dear. 6- All these questions are beyond the field of reason. 7- Why should there be ‘fellow-feeling’, I love my brother? 8- I have these desires and must fulfil them. 9- The whole idea of human life can be put into that one word, ‘Unselfishness’. 10- Reason does not know about unselfishness, loving my brother. The animals don’t do it. Where does it come from? 11- They all claim this knowledge has come from the beyond. 12- Yes, correct, it was from beyond reason, but it came from within themselves. 13- Mohammed was not a trained Sage, but he said some wonderful truths. 14- We do it slowly, by regular practice, take up the the study of the super-conscious state. 15- Reason itself will show us to the highest plane. 16- All the steps are intended to bring us to that super-conscious state, Rapture. 17- Not only is it possible, but every person must, eventually, get to that state, and that is religion. 18- Experience is the only teacher we have. 19- How dare they call God ‘Infinite’, yet compress Him within the covers of a little book! 20- The mind becomes an unbroken stream flowing towards that focused point. 21- Everything comes under the control of such a mind. 22- This is the highest state of existence. 23- These ideas have to be understood in Meditation. 24- This Meditation must begin with gross objects and slowly rise to the finer, ending ‘objectless’. 25- Such is the evil of running after enjoyments. 26- Then the glory of the Soul, undisturbed by distractions, shines through.

PREPARATORY RENUNCIATION. Then begins real Spiritual growth.
Bliss where the pleasures of the senses mean nothing.
Their sense-enjoyments become less and less.
Advanced class – Bhakti-Yoga.
Book, Para-Bhakti – Supreme Love. Ch. 1.
228 W. 39th St. Ny. Class in his rooms.
27 January 1896. CW 3.
1- In all the Four Paths, renunciation is necessary. 2- Then begins renunciation, real spiritual growth. 3- The ‘Sage of Work’ gives up the fruits of his action. He does not care for reward. 4- The ‘Sage of Mysticism’ learns through his own experience. The ‘Sage of Knowledge’ learns that everything is an illusion. 5- The ‘Sage of Love’ learns renunciation the easy way, as things develop, things drop off by themselves. 6- Their sense enjoyments become less and less. 7- A state of bliss where the pleasures of the senses mean nothing. 8- The love of the pleasures of the senses gets dimmer and vanishes completely. 9- Forms vanish, rituals fly away! Books are superseded! Bondages fall off by their own. 10- The binding fetters are all loosened free.

ONE EXISTENCE APPEARING AS MANY.
Alice in Wonderland – that most wonderful book.
Advanced class – Book, Gnana-Yoga.
228 W 39th St. NY. Class in his rooms.
29 January 1896. CW 2.
1- Renunciation is the turning point on which all the Four Paths of Moral and Frugal Living [4 Yoga Paths] depend. 2- All the sciences are for this one end, to bring happiness to humanity. 3- And in the ‘Follower of Knowledge’ there is the highest plane of happiness in The Self, The Soul. 4- Sense-gratifications cannot be of the highest value because they do not find in them this highest pleasure that they do find in Knowledge, which is the one goal. 5- All who work in ignorance are the draft horses of the Goddesses. 6- Thus far we have seen how there is but One Soul, there cannot be two. 7- How, when seen as It is, It is the One Infinite Being. 8- There is only The One Existence, The Soul, The Self. 9- Going further, when Knowledge comes, all Delusions vanish. 10- The One, in Delusion, is seen as many. As the rope is mistaken for a snake. 11- When you see Delusion, you do not see Reality. 12- When you see yourself as a body, you are just the body. You perceive the touch, taste, vision, etc. 13- The story of Sir Humphrey Davy – he inhaled the laughing-gas. 14- When this little puny consciousness is gone, The Reality shines. 15- How does the Monist theory explain these various phases? 16- The visions are the various projections of our various minds. 17- A person, still more ignorant, all their life frightened by fanatics with ideas of hell, will see this world as hell! 18- In a train looking out, you think the land is moving, but it is the train that is moving. 19- Alice in Wonderland – that most wonderful book. 20- All these books they write that try to make children swallow the author’s own ideas are nonsense. 21- When we wake from this dream of the world, compare it with Reality, the dream will be seen as Delusion. 22- Yet the sun itself, The Unchanging, is You! 23- Unto them belong eternal peace, unto none else, unto none else. 24- How is this dream to be broken? How shall we Realise this One Existence? 25- See my condition; slave of the mind, slave of the body, slave of everything. 26- Let body go, let mind go, let Gods go, let ghosts go! 27– Then fear goes. When all is One, there is no other to fear. 28- Until every drop of blood tingles with the idea, I am That! 29– There never came help from anywhere except yourself. 30– The prayer you thought was answered by some Being, you answered yourself unknowingly. 31– The words that will bring out the tremendous energy within you. The infinite power sleeping in your heart. 32– Wherever there is a thought of weakness, stay well clear of the place. Hear argument no more. 33– The Truth has now to be meditated upon. 34– The idea of the body and the mind must go. 35– ‘Awake, arise, and stop not until the goal is reached’, say the Vedas. 36– I must give the mind a hard blow and say, ‘I am not the body, I am The Self’. Why make the body nice? Let the body go. 37– Who shall make me perfect? I am perfect already. 38– When they see imperfection, it is their own minds projecting themselves. 39- They seek to tear themselves from this bondage to matter by intellectual conviction.

RENUNCIATION THAT RESULTS FROM LOVE.
Get rid of your petty personalities! When you see Delusion you do not see Reality.
When you see a person going after a beautiful face, do you think that it is the handful of arranged molecules which really attracts the person? Not at all.
Book, Para-Bhakti – Supreme Love. Ch. 2.
30 January 1896. Class. CW 3.
1- Whatever in society is good, great, sublime, is the working out of that love. 2- The same cooking fire that cooks a meal may burn a child. 3- The science of higher love. 4- The real, all-embracing Divine Beauty. 5- Take yourself away from all the world’s little selfish clingings, your petty personalities. 6- You will see there are millions of channels in which God is expressing Itself as love. 7- Who can attract a Soul really? Only THAT! 8- No one loved a child except on account of That which is within. The Lord/The Soul is the great magnet. 9- This mighty attraction towards God/The Soul makes all other attractions vanish. 10- All forms and symbols are useless to That. 11- Such persons alone have the right to talk of universal brotherhood.

Just One Spark of That Infinite Fire!
‘That is the most foolish thing you have ever said, Emperor’!
THE REAL NATURE OF MAN.
Possibly: 191 Piccadilly, London. 16 June 1896?
The Royal Institute of Painters.
Book, Gnana-Yoga, Ch 2. CW 2.
1- Has the person gone forever or does something remain? 2- Is death the end of all these things? 3- We run after everything to make ourselves happy. 4- Either believe with the nihilists (who say everything is nothing/pointless), or seek for The Real. 5- ‘Carry him, O Fire, in your arms gently, to where the fathers live, to where there is no more death’. 6- The time when no person died unless they chose to, when all was perfect and the mind was pure. 7- All have the story of the deluge – to remove all corruption. 8- The purpose of language is to express the Truth within. 9- Often behind the fine, polished phrase is arrant trash. 10- So we need not throw overboard something that doesn’t fit the notions of the moderns. 11- Huxley has said it and that is enough. 12- This modern superstition is worship of filthy lucre, lust and power. 13- For modern evolutionists, the human is the evolution of the mollusc. 14- That first mollusc or protoplasm must have contained the original energy. 15- To say the force called The Soul is from the formation of all the molecules of the body is putting the cart before the horse. 16- One thread of a spider’s web, if travelling at high velocity, has the strength of a chain. 17- I never saw anybody who could eat food for me. 18– Whatsoever has form, with its particles, requires something else behind to move it. 19- You have a Soul and I have a Soul. What is this Soul? 20- That which is beyond time, space and causation must be Infinite. 21- The Infinite cannot be Two. Two Souls are not the Reality. 22- Every Soul is Infinite. 23- When people give up the idea of the body, then they have risen to a higher ideal. 24- No one has the same body for many minutes, yet we think of it as the same body. 25- The Infinite cannot change in any way – it is absurd. 26- Old, comfortable Delusions that think we are little limited beings. 27- People are frightened when told this. 28- The more we concentrate on limited things the faster we move towards death. 29- When they can say, ”I am in all lives, I am in everybody, I am the Universe”, then will they be fearless. 30- That was your own beating heart and you did not know it. 31- Every good thought or act is simply tearing pieces from the veil. 32- That cannot be known, knowledge is ‘objectifying’, knowledge is a limitation. 33- Extreme self-denial is the centre of all morality. 34- The more this present self fades away, the more the Real Self becomes apparent. 35- Just one spark of That Infinite Fire! 36- These days we have to measure everything by its usefulness. 37- No happiness is ever found in the senses. 38- Ignorance is the mother of all selfishness, depression. 39- But with machines and material advances, it will never be. 40- Material advances only increase depression, as oil poured on the fire. 41- There are two sorts of courage. 42- ”My brother, You are That! You are That!” 43- Where the highest truths become practical. That is the greatest society. 44- There is a great tendency in modern times to talk too much and decry thought. 45- The lion cub brought up by sheep. 46- You are like the infinite sky. The same eternal blue. Clouds play at covering it for a moment, then they vanish. 47- A young man waiting for his beloved thought it was his sweetheart. 48- Say to your minds, ‘I am That, I am That‘. Let it ring day and night.

UNITY, THE GOAL OF RELIGION.
This universe of the senses.
New York, 1896. Exact place, date, unknown.
1- It belongs to the super-sensuous, it is a vision, beyond reasoning, beyond the intellect. 2- In our little universe we see thought arise, whence we do not know. 3- I shall try to bring you the theory that Spirituality comes from within. 4- Why struggle for that Infinite Unknown? 5- But most of us must enquire into the beyond. 6- ‘When you Know God, you will know everything’. 7- It is Spirituality that makes the difference between a person and an animal. 8- It will make of this human animal a God. 9- If you take away Spirituality what will remain? Nothing but a forest of brutes. 10- Wisdom is the goal of all life. 11- A person is infinitely progressing – it is absurd on the face of it. 12- Knowledge means finding that unity [Union=Yoga]. 13- We regard Spirituality and philosophy as the same thing. 14- Vedanta pushes further in searching for The Final Unity.

1- The Gnani-Sage [Path of Knowledge] wishes to realise the version of ‘That’, in loving ‘It’, they love the whole universe. 2- To the Bhakti-Sage [Path of Love], the sum-total of all love, of all Souls in the Universe, is God. 3- God is the Total of All Understanding. 4- The conviction that nothing that happens is against us. 5- The body is everything. Bodily enjoyment is all-in-all. 6- Can you reach where all sense of self is lost? It is the pinnacle of the religion of love. 7- Wealth and even life itself; the Sage always holds ready for the service of others. 8- What happens? Everything must get dissolved and die. 7- The horrible ‘body-idea’ that breeds all the selfishness, the delusion that we are only the body. 8- If you know you are not the body, then you have nothing to struggle against. 9- There comes a peace that passes all understanding.

THE METHOD AND THE MEANS. Control of the mood is as necessary as control of the organs.
Book, Bhakti-Yoga/Path of Love. Ch 10.
CW 3.
1- The dominance of the Balanced Mind (Sattva) is necessary. 2- The food we eat has to be carefully taken care of. 3- An unbroken flow of the Infinite One’s presence will result. 4- Control of the mood is as necessary as control of the organs. 5- The practice of restraint and denial. 6- The list of traits conducive to purity. 7- The test of Non-injury is the absence of jealousy. 8- This Soul is not to be attained by the weak. 9- This is for the young, the healthy, the strong. 10- It is the cheerful mind that perseveres. 11- The stronger the will, the less it yields to the sway of the emotions.
Chap. 49 Page 206
INTRODUCTION TO THE PATH OF KNOWLEDGE.
The Goal is not reached by external methods nor by reason alone.
Book, Gnana-Yoga, Path of Knowledge. CW 2.
1- A person cannot reach Truth by external methods. 2- If we know the human Soul, we know the whole of nature. 3- To reach the Truth by reason alone is impossible. 4- The sensory and motor nerves are necessary for perception. 5- Intelligence cannot be in matter nor can it be produced by matter. Where then is intelligence? 6- It is necessarily coloured by our own tendencies. 7- Time, space and cause with the result are the conditions through which the mind perceives. 8- As each brings their own mind, so they see their own world. 9- The Undifferentiated is the perfect state. 10- The Self is Free. Its light percolates through every form of mind. 11- The real Self, when mixed with mind and body is not Free. 12- Life is a compound, it will die. 13- You have never changed, you have never existed [being only the Soul]. 14- Everything struggles to return to that state it had before these Delusions, to be Free. 15- What then is the value of life? It is to give us experience.

PREPARATIONS FOR A HIGHER LIFE.
The Mother plays and we are her dolls.
Notes on … CW 5.
1- The first thing necessary is a quiet and peaceful life. 2- Have that desire for God and you shall have God. 3- Like the fool wanting to cross the river who caught hold of a crocodile mistaking it for a log. 4- Can a bag of gold be the ideal of my Soul? 5- Bless your mistakes then. They are part of you too. 6- Meditate! The Soul thinking of Itself! This marvellous touch of The Soul! 7- The body and its senses are our enemy. 8- Until you reach the idea, ‘I am the Witness’. 9- The Mother is playing and we are like her dolls in this play. 10- Then all our toil will have been for nothing – infinite rhythm, endless and purposeless, going we know not where.
